Practical steps to equip your congregation without crossing the line.

A Nonpartisan Guide to Voter Education in the Church

What You Can Do

Voter Registration

  • Host a nonpartisan voter registration drive in your lobby.
  • Include registration information in your bulletin and newsletter.
  • Train volunteers to help members register online.

Voter Education

  • Distribute nonpartisan voter guides from organizations like the League of Women Voters.
  • Host a forum where all candidates in a race are invited to speak.
  • Provide information on polling locations, early voting, and absentee ballots.

Civic Prayer

  • Dedicate a service to praying for the nation, leaders, and voters.
  • Encourage members to pray as they prepare to vote.

What You Cannot Do

As a 501(c)(3) organization, your church cannot:

  • Endorse or oppose any candidate from the pulpit or in official communications.
  • Use church resources to support a specific campaign.
  • Allow candidates to solicit votes on church property.

When in doubt, stay nonpartisan. The goal is participation, not persuasion.
