Interview: CFO Marcus Webb on Financial Leadership in Uncertain Times

---

Marcus, you have guided three companies through IPOs. What do most leaders misunderstand about financial leadership?

That it is only about the numbers. The numbers tell you what happened. Financial leadership is about anticipating what is about to happen and positioning the organization accordingly. It is as much art as science.

How do you lead your finance team through periods of economic uncertainty?

Overcommunication and scenario planning. We do not plan for one future — we plan for three. What if the economy contracts 20%? What if it grows 15%? What if it stays flat? Having answers to those questions before they become reality is the whole job.

What advice do you have for Black professionals aspiring to the CFO seat?

Get uncomfortable with risk. Many of us were taught to be conservative with money because scarcity was real. That wisdom is foundational. But the CFO seat requires you to think boldly about capital deployment, strategic investment, and calculated risk. Learn to hold both.

What is the most important financial principle for Black business owners?

Separate your personal finances from your business finances from day one. The mixing of those two things destroys more Black businesses than competition or economic downturns combined.
