Interview: CEO Spotlight with Adrienne Carter

How one woman built a $50M company from a kitchen table idea.

---

Adrienne, take us back to the beginning. What was the kitchen table moment?

I had just been laid off from a corporate marketing job and had two kids at home. I had $800 in my bank account and a skill set that companies needed. So I started sending emails. Within a month, I had three clients. Within a year, I had a team of seven.

At what point did you realize this was becoming something significant?

When I had to turn down a client because I didn't have bandwidth. That was the moment I knew I had to stop thinking like a freelancer and start thinking like a CEO.

What is the biggest misconception about scaling a business?

People think growth is about money. It is not. It is about systems and people. If your systems cannot handle volume and your team is not aligned, more revenue just reveals more chaos.

What advice would you give a Black woman starting her business today?

Stop waiting for permission. Stop waiting until everything is perfect. Start messy, stay consistent, and invest in your business like you believe in it.
